The Ask

With the 2019-2020 season on the horizon, The University of Memphis decided it was time for a fresh look on the portable hardwood basketball court at the FedEx Forum.

Due to our close working relationship, The University reached out to us here at Sports Floors, Inc. to assist with the project. Sports Floors, Inc. has worked closely with the University of Memphis installing and maintaining their wood and synthetic athletic floors for more than a decade.

Our newest wood athletic floor projects can be seen in both the Elma Roane Fieldhouse and the new Laurie Walton Practice Facility.

The Process

Working closely with the University of Memphis marketing department, Sports Floors Inc. created and reviewed court concept designs until the final court layout was finalized. The final design and details were chosen by the University of Memphis along with Coach Hardaway.

Every square inch of the portable gym floor has either paint or stain in the University of Memphis Tigers brand colors.

The Tiger stripes in the border and free throw lanes show the Tiger Pride, and ties into the “Stripe Up” campaign that’s currently being painted all over campus and the city of Memphis!

The Ask

On a warm day in June of 2019, the floor was transported from the FedEx Forum to a top-secret location in downtown Memphis. Behind closed doors, and under campus police watch, the crew at Sports Floors, Inc. began to work.

The first step was to sand off the stained skyline and old paint job and prepare the court for its new look! After a few days of sanding the floor was ready for our artists to begin.

The staining of the main playing surface was completed first. Custom grey and blue stains were created to match the universities colors. The Tiger stripes, main center logo, and game lines were then painted to complete the floor.

After the painting was completed, the Sports Floors, Inc. crew put finish on the floor and the project was almost complete. The portable hardwood gym floor was then disassembled and stacked before being transported back to the FedEx Forum, where it sat waiting to make its debut!

To build a unique program, you need a unique floor, and Sports Floors, Inc. is proud to have worked alongside the University of Memphis to achieve this goal.
