It’s the new year, and there’s no better way to kick off 2023 than with a highlight reel. It was difficult to choose our top 3 favorite jobs – especially when all of the work we do is so unique in look, feel, and use – but after narrowing down the list, we’ve got quite the selection. Check out our favorite sports floors of all time!
The University of Memphis Portable Floor
Sports Floors, Inc. has always had a close relationship with the University of Memphis. In fact, we’ve created multiple basketball courts for the team, including the Elma Roane Fieldhouse and the Laurie Walton Practice Facility. So when we were asked to create a brand new portable floor for the Tigers’ FedEx Forum court, we jumped at the opportunity.
We worked closely with the University of Memphis Marketing Department, and Penny Hardaway himself, to customize a completely redesigned look for the Tigers’ premiere floor. The Department wanted a shock of blue tiger stripes to really make an impact on visiting teams. We used custom stains to create the desired effect in different shades of blue. Then our professional painters took time to paint the classic main center logo before we sealed the floor with the finish and carted it to the FedEx Forum.
The best part of this floor is that it is portable, so the University of Memphis can install and disassemble it whenever necessary. Portable floors like this make it possible to mix-use a space like the FedEx Forum. We still can’t get over how it all turned out!
Crosstown High School
After sitting empty for decades, Crosstown Concourse revitalized the old Sears building in Midtown Memphis, and we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the effort! When we began working on the commission for the Crosstown High School gym floor, we collaborated with the High School to create a totally unique floor that brightened the room and highlighted the team’s spirit.
We used different grades of wood to create a contrasting effect on the sports floor that sectioned off the goal lines. The coolest part? The 50-foot Yeti logo, of course! As our largest mascot to date, this one holds a special place in our hearts.
LSU Gymnastics Practice Facility
Not all sports floors are used for basketball! In fact, we design floors for multiple purposes, which is why Louisiana State University sought us out to create a safe and reliable practice facility floor for their gymnasts. Like all jobs, we took this one very seriously, but there wasn’t as much of a design element to this project as there was with many others we’ve done. Instead, the focus was to create a stable floor that absorbed shock well and kept the gymnasts out of harm’s way. Tumbling and flipping can be dangerous, so having a certified DIN stamp puts them at ease during practice.
This one is certainly one of the most unique floors we’ve created, but it just goes to show the level the Sports Floors, Inc. team is willing to go to get the job done!
